Glass and Timber Houses is a pair of bespoke detached houses on a backland site in Dulwich. The site was formerly occupied by a joinery workshop, surrounded by streets of Victorian terraced houses and gardens. Conceived and built as a sustainable self build project with living roofs, it formed part of the 2004 RIBA exhibition “Future House London”. The project utilising low impact foundations and timber components engineered from sawmill off cuts. Wherever possible environmental considerations have driven the project these include sedum roofs, grey water re-cycling and the latest in insulation technology. The visual linking of garden space through each house creates an oasis of green within this previous industrial site.
